A healthy menstrual cycle is at the centre of comfort, health and fertility

Hormones and periods get such bad press. Hormones are blamed for all sorts, from mood swings to weight gain, from bloating to acne. And then there is the ‘curse’ itself; period pain, exhaustion, and just the general inconvenience. What if I told you it didn’t have to be like that. That periods are meant to be pain free and can be pain free Better than that, the menstrual cycle gives women a window into their health. When a woman understands what a healthy ovulation and period should be, she can monitor her cycle and detect any potential health concerns such as under active thyroid. This gives her the opportunity to take appropriate action with lifestyle adjustments and/or seek professional help sooner rather than later.

The menstrual cycle is central to every aspect of health and should be addressed regardless of what health concern a woman presents with. The main events of the menstrual cycle are ovulation and the menses/period. Ovulation is the process by which a woman makes the key reproductive hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones aren’t just for fertility, they also are important in: bone density, cardiovascular health, mental health, anxiety, cholesterol regulation, skin health and more. This makes it even more important to know, understand and manage the menstrual cycle.

Currently, there are not many options available for women experiencing hormone imbalance. The go to prescription is the Pill which as we know, isn’t a medicine, it is a contraception. It may relieve symptoms by ‘switching off’ a woman’s reproductive system but what happens when she stops taking the Pill? Acne, PCOS, irregular cycles, amenorrhea return. New symptoms may appear and and underlying cause of the symptoms may have progressed.

Herbal medicine

Herbal medicine

Chinese medicine excels in period and hormone problems. It has been regulating, optimising and balancing hormones for thousands of years without any risk to health. Its focus is on the cause of the symptom and returning the body to full health. During a consultation, details about: the length of the period and cycle, colour of the blood, whether pain is sharp or dull, pain location and level, presence of clots, PMS & breast tenderness helps determine the root cause of the hormone imbalance. This allows for an accurate prescription of herbal medicine and/or acupuncture points.
