During your consultation Maria will access your energy pattern as set out in Chinese medicine, and will choose acupuncture points to correct it. This may be something like too much Cold in the Uterus, Kidney Yang/Yin Deficiency, or Liver Qi Stagnantion.
This abdominal-sacral massage focuses on aligning the reproductive and abdominal organs. It helps to structurally align the spine, and particular attention is given to the sacrum, lumbar and thoracic spine.
A complete session of Maya Abdominal Therapy involves a comprehensive range of strokes to both the upper and lower abdomen, some deeper work focussed around the navel and some lighter lymphatic movements to the thighs.
This is followed by work on the posterior which begins by checking the pelvis for alignment, and then a series of gentle stretches and pulls which help to create space in the pelvic bowl where the reproductive organs are. Work on the upper back is eases tension and helps to address digestive problems. Work on the lower back and sacrum focuses on improving nerve flow to the reproductive organs.
Work on the back is essential and included in every Maya treatment. If you have back pain a gentle touch will be used and/or the posterior work can be adapted – it is never missed out.
Following your treatment Maria will spend at least 20 minutes will teaching you how to do the self care massage yourself, along with other supportive therapies which you can carry out at home.
Maria uses cupping on the back along either side of the spine and along the sacrum. Cupping therapy, is a safe, painless, and non-invasive technique, and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.
By creating suction and negative pressure, cupping has been found to affect the body up to a depth of four inches. This is used to treat muscle pain and spasms, drain excess fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions, connective tissue and stubborn knots in soft tissue. It also stimulates blood circulation and brings increased blood flow to nourish stagnant muscles and skin. It enhances the flow of energy, stimulates the peripheral nervous system, activates the lymphatic system, clears colon blockages, and helps to activate and clear the arteries, veins, and capillaries, and improves varicose veins.
Cupping therapy uses glass cups on the skin to create a vacuum. Drawing up the skin is believed to open up the pores; helping to stimulate the flow of blood, balancing and realigning the flow of qi, breaking up obstructions, and creating an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body.
Maria follows-up each consultation by providing you with detailed notes via email along with additional information tailored to your specific needs.
When we address issues of the sacrum and lower back, we influence the anterior body. Why? The nerve pathways that support the pelvic floor and organs arise from the sacrum in both men and women.

The sacrum is often regarded as ‘sacred’ and the importance of working here is paramount. It is from here that the pelvic bowl receives its nerve energy, injuries and even falls from childhood may impeed the optimal flow and it is by working deeply into this area that we see many positive results in our clients.
