Irregular Periods

After 6 cycles using Clomid, I returned to the doctor who referred me to the Fertility Clinic in the RVH Belfast. She suggested that I may have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, despite the fact that I have no other symptoms of this.

We had been trying to conceive for just under a year and I was having very irregular monthly cycles. It was almost impossible for me to know when my period would arrive. It was always a week to 10 days earlier or later than the month before. On two occasions I had extremely heavy periods after cycles of 49 and 60 days respectively where I bled all night quite heavily with clotting and clumping etc. this was very scary but I knew that it wasn’t a miscarriage as I had tested for pregnancy when the cycles were so long. As a result I decided to seek advice from my GP, who thought that I may not be ovulating each month which was causing the long, irregular cycles. I was sent for blood tests in the following month’s cycle which confirmed I hadn’t ovulated. The doctor prescribed, Clomid , which is an ovulation inducing drug and whilst I was taking it I had completely regular cycles and was ovulating each month. However I still didn’t get pregnant!

After 6 cycles using Clomid, I returned to the doctor who referred me to the Fertility Clinic in the RVH Belfast. She suggested that I may have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, despite the fact that I have no other symptoms of this. At this appointment I was given an internal scan which came back clear and normal. My husband’s sperm count was checked which was also normal, so we were no further forward as to why we weren’t getting pregnant or why my cycle was so irregular! We were placed on a waiting list for our next appointment and told it would be at least 12 weeks! It was terrible feeling so helpless and just having to play the waiting game! I was beginning to think I was infertile which is a very scary, lonely and hopeless feeling!

Meanwhile, a close friend had been reading about Maria Rafferty’s clinic and the Maya massage therapies for fertility in one of the daily papers and she recommended I make an appointment. I went for my first appointment 3 weeks before I was due to attend the fertility clinic in the Royal and I had a fantastic experience. I was able to talk about all my worries and concerns about my cycle and the things I didn’t understand about my own body. The massage itself is a beautiful experience and you really feel that something amazing is happening in your body. Maria demonstrated the self – care techniques really well and I feel these are a vital part of the Maya massage treatment. I did these religiously each night at bedtime. I felt much more aware of my body and what was happening throughout my cycle and I actually began to feel ’normal’ again.

However when it came time for my period to arrive nothing happened and I was very disappointed, thinking all my hard work had been in vain. My period arrived a few days after the date I expected it in that month (rather than a week or more late which was usual) and I was very excited at the prospect that I was going to solve this problem naturally! At my second appointment I had another massage treatment and for the first time in many months I felt my body giving me the signals throughout my cycle that ovulation was occurring and things were progressing normally. I had high hopes that I would have my first natural, regular cycle in at least 18 months with my period arriving exactly on time.

I have no doubt in my mind that acupuncture with Maya massage and self- care I was doing at home did enough to bring my body back into balance and that there was never really anything seriously wrong, it was just a case of my body being unbalanced However when it came time for my period to arrive nothing happened and I was very disappointed, thinking all my hard work had been in vain. I did however have all the usual pre-menstrual symptoms which made me all the more disappointed as I was convinced my period would arrive exactly on time. A week after my period was due, I was to attend the dentist and I knew that there was a possibility he may have to carry out an x ray! Somewhere in my mind I remembered reading that a pregnant woman should not have an x ray and so I thought if there was any possibility I might be I should perhaps take a test and set my mind at ease. I was convinced however that it was totally pointless and I would only feel like an idiot but I went ahead with no hopes at all of being pregnant and took a test just for the sake of it!

I’m not lying when I say that I got the shock of my life when it came back positive! I took three more tests that day just to be sure (Seems a little mad I know, but I really couldn’t believe it!) and I was undoubtedly pregnant! My husband and I were over the moon, quite literally for us it was a miracle!!

I have no doubt in my mind that acupuncture with Maya massage and self- care I was doing at home did enough to bring my body back into balance and that there was never really anything seriously wrong, it was just a case of my body being unbalanced. I cannot thank Maria enough or recommend her treatments highly enough. Words just cannot express our gratitude!
Attending for that first massage was the best decision I ever made! I am sure there are lots of other girls in the same position as I was and if even one of them reads this and decides to give Maya massage a go then I’ll be really happy. I’m living proof that it works.
